The George Institute

The George Institute for Global Health is a not-for-profit global medical research institute established and headquartered in Sydney, with major centres in China, India and the UK, and an international network of experts and collaborators.

Our mission is to improve the health of millions of people worldwide, particularly those living in disadvantaged circumstances, by challenging the status quo and using innovative approaches to prevent and treat the world’s biggest killers: non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injury.

Our work aims to generate effective, evidence-based and affordable solutions to the world’s biggest health challenges. We research the chronic and critical conditions that cause the greatest loss of life, the greatest impairment of life quality and the most substantial economic burden, particularly in resource-poor settings.”

If you have space and wish to go into further detail:

“Non-communicable diseases collectively cause over 70% of all deaths worldwide, or 41 million people each year, including 15 million people dying prematurely aged between 30 and 69. Over 85% of these premature deaths are in low- and middle-income countries.

Injuries claimed 5 million lives in 2015, the majority of which are in low- and middle-income countries. Compounding these issues is the fact that millions of people worldwide do not have access to primary health care.

To address these challenges, our research is focussed on creating better treatments, better care and healthier societies by:

  • finding better treatments for the world’s biggest health problems;
  • transforming primary health care to support better health for more people; and
  • harnessing the power of communities, governments and markets to improve health.
